"Logos"The Word

1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

(Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:). In the Godhead, there is one God, but three offices, and God (Yahvah) fills all three offices. (1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit: and these three are one.).

“Elohim,” (God), occurs 2,700 times. It first occurrence connects it with creation, and gives it its essential means as the Creator. (Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.). It indicates with His relation to mankind as His creatures, where it stands in contrast with “Yahvah,” (“Lord God”), as indicating covenant relationship. Elohim is God the Son, the living “Word,” (Logos) with creature form to create. (Ephesians 3:9 And to make all men see what the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ.).

“Yahvah,” (“Lord God“), while “Elohim” is God as the Creator of all things, “Yahvah” is the same God in covenant relation to those whom He has created. “Yahvah” means the “Eternal,” the “Immutable One,” He Who Was and Is, and Is To Come. He is especially therefore, the God of Israel, and the God of those who are redeemed, and are thus now “in Christ.” (Isaiah 43:10-11 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.).

“Logos,” the “Word,” (not in the grammatical sense), but the “spoken word”: the word, not in its outward form, but as connected with the inward thought: the word, not written, but spoken: the word, not as a part of speech, but as part of what is uttered.

Hence, used of the 2nd person of the blessed Trinity, because as the word spoken manifests the invisible thought: so, He manifests to us the invisible Deity and Godhead.

As “Logos” is the embodiment and outward expression of the invisible thought, so the 2nd person manifests the invisible Deity, and is said to be “God manifested in the flesh,” (1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.): “the express image of His person,” (Hebrew 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;): the image of the invisible God,” (Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:).

The Godhead is “Spirit,” (John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.), and as spirit has no likeness to matter, God himself took some creature form, (not human) before He created anything, in order that creation might have a mediator, or a means of communion with Deity. Hence, Christ is said to have been, “In the beginning, “ (John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.): “before all things,” (Colossians 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.), “The first born of every creature,” (Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:), “the beginning of the creation of God,” (Revelation 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;): and hence, “In Him dwell all the fullness of the Godhead bodily,” (Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.).

“Spiritual” in the Greek is (Pnewmatikos), (Pnyoo-mat-ik-os) and means, as belonging to the Spirit, or determined by the Spirit: influenced by it, or proceeding from it

The “Logos” is therefore God, i.e., “Elohim.” The works of creation is predicated of both (Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: Hebrews 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;). Elohim is not the tile of Deity, but the title of God as the Creator, and always has reference to creation, power, and glory, (while the tile “Yahvah” sets forth the self existent one, and His covenant relationships).

Elohim is the one who was set apart by Deity (so to speak) by an oath for His office in relation to creation. For “Alah” means to take an oath, and thus the term Elohim is not the title of Deity, but is applied to any who are set apart with the solemnity of an oath to be the representative of another, to carry out certain acts: hence it is applied not only to the 2nd person of the Trinity, but also to magistrates (Exodus 21:6 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever. Exodus 22:8 If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods.), quoted (Acts 23:5 Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.), to Moses (Exodus 7:1 And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.), and even to Idols (Exodus 12:12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. Numbers 25:2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. Genesis 31:30 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father’s house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods?), because they were used for representing God. Plural, because Elohim represents the Godhead. Elohim is God applied by way of difference of office.

Elohim, therefore, is the “Logos” or “Word,” who took creature hood, to create, as He afterwards took humanity, to redeem. As such He is the Father`s “Servant,” “Angel,” or “Messenger,” (Elohim, denotes His being set apart to the office with an oath: Messiah, or Christ, His anointing to the work of Redemption: Angel, or Messenger, referring to His actual dispatch: Servant, with reference to the service actually to be done). He appeared to Adam and the Patriarchs (Joshua 5:13-15 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.).

His mission in connection with creation was to manifest Deity to His creatures, (Proverbs 8:22-31 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.). His work was begun with Adam (made in His likeness and image), but the fall interrupted that mission, and it was necessarily suspended. Then “the Word,” “Logos” was made flesh (John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.), in order that He might redeem the creation from the curse. Made flesh in order that He might suffer and die, (Hebrew 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: Psalms 40:6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. Isaiah 42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. Philippians 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:).

As the “Logos,” He was “the everlasting Son of the Father,” “the only begotten Son,” who was “Given.” Given to become a human child. Hence, He was “the Son” before He was “a gift,” but could not be a human “child” before He was “born.”

“God of the substance of His Father, begotten before the worlds,” but “Man of the substance of His mother, born in the world.”

But further, inasmuch as the Logos, as the Living Word, became so to manifest and reveal Deity to us, so “the written Word” was given with the same object and for the same purpose. Hence, it is some times difficult to know which is intended, as the same things are predicated of each. Both are “the truth,” (John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.). Both are “everlasting,” (Psalm 119:89 For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. Matthew 24:34-35 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. 1 Peter 1:25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.), Both are “life,” (John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;), Both “save,” ( (Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 1 Corinthians 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.), Both “purify,” (Titus 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. 1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:), Both “sanctify,” (John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.)Both “beget to new life (1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. James 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.), Both “shall judge,” (John 12:46:48 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.), Both are “glorified,” (Romans 15:9 And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. Acts 13:48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.).

The Holy Spirit, in the Greek is (Pnyoo-mah), an means, the wind, breath, breathed forth, the element of life, predicated of men and beast, the life principle springing from God.

The Holy Spirit, God`s Spirit, which manifests itself creatively, equipping Christ: and accomplishing God`s saving work in man.

Personality belongs to the Spirit in the same manner as to the Son (Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.). And the operation of the Spirit (John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.), must be referred to the Holy Spirit, as the agent who accomplishes in and for man the works of divine redemption.
